QWERTY Keyboard Layout: Everything You Need to Know
If you've used a keyboard in the U.S., you've probably used QWERTY for years without thinking much about it.
The name is simple: look at the first six letters on the upper-left letter row—Q, W, E, R, T, Y.
But knowing that doesn't answer the questions that tend to matter when you're actually choosing or using a keyboard:
Is QWERTY the same as ANSI?
Can an ISO keyboard still be QWERTY?
Does a 75% keyboard use a different layout?
Is US QWERTY different from UK QWERTY?
And if QWERTY came from typewriters, why are we still using it on modern mechanical keyboards?
Those distinctions are where "keyboard layout" gets confusing.
So instead of treating QWERTY as a piece of typewriter trivia, let's start with what the term actually tells you—and, just as importantly, what it doesn't.

What Is a QWERTY Keyboard?
A QWERTY keyboard is a keyboard that uses the familiar letter arrangement beginning:

The name comes from the first six letters in that row. It is not an acronym.
For most English-speaking users in the U.S., QWERTY is the letter arrangement learned from the first time they use a laptop, desktop keyboard, or phone.
But here's the distinction that makes the rest of this topic much easier:
QWERTY describes where the letters are. It does not describe the entire keyboard.
Knowing that a keyboard is QWERTY does not automatically tell you:
- whether it uses an ANSI or ISO physical layout;
- whether it is configured for US or UK English;
- whether it is 60%, 75%, TKL, or full-size;
- whether it has a numpad;
- what shape its Enter key has;
- or what your operating system will output when you press a key.
This is why two keyboards can both be QWERTY and still look noticeably different.

QWERTY, ANSI, ISO, and 75% Are Not the Same Kind of "Layout"
One reason keyboard terminology gets messy is that we use the word layout to describe several different things.
A more useful way to think about a keyboard is in layers.

That means a keyboard might be described as:

Once you separate those layers, specifications that initially look complicated become much easier to read.

QWERTY vs. ANSI: What's the Difference?
This is probably the most important distinction for a U.S. keyboard buyer.
QWERTY describes letter placement.
ANSI, in everyday keyboard terminology, describes a physical key arrangement commonly used on U.S. keyboards.
A typical ANSI keyboard has a wide, horizontal Enter key and a relatively long left Shift key.
ISO keyboards use a different physical arrangement. The most obvious visual clues are usually the taller Enter key and the additional key around the left Shift area.
So:
QWERTY tells you where the letters are. ANSI tells you how the physical keys around them are arranged.
A keyboard can be both ANSI and QWERTY.
In fact, that combination is what most U.S. users think of as a conventional PC or mechanical keyboard.
But QWERTY is not exclusive to ANSI.
An ISO keyboard can use QWERTY letters too.
Is QWERTY the Same as a US Keyboard?
No.
A conventional U.S. English keyboard normally uses QWERTY, but QWERTY itself is not a regional specification.
A British keyboard can also use QWERTY.
The letters may appear in essentially the same familiar positions while other parts of the keyboard differ.
For example, US and British layouts can differ in:

How Can I Tell Which Keyboard Layout I Have?
You don't need to identify every key. Start with four quick checks.
1. Look at the first six letter keys
If they read:

you're using the QWERTY letter arrangement.
If they begin A Z E R T Y, you're looking at AZERTY.
If they begin Q W E R T Z, you're looking at QWERTZ.
2. Look at the Enter key
A wide horizontal Enter key is a strong sign of an ANSI-style physical layout.
A taller Enter key generally points toward ISO.
JIS keyboards have their own physical differences and additional keys intended for Japanese input.
3. Look at the symbols
Letters aren't the whole story.
A keyboard can be QWERTY while using regional punctuation and symbol conventions that differ from the U.S. layout.
If the letters look familiar but symbols aren't where you expect them, you may be looking at a different regional configuration—or your operating system may be using a different software layout.
4. Look at the keys that are missing
No numpad?
No function row?
Dedicated arrow keys but no navigation cluster?
Those differences usually tell you about the keyboard's form factor, not whether it is QWERTY.
A 60% keyboard and a full-size keyboard can both use exactly the same QWERTY letter arrangement.

Why Isn't QWERTY in Alphabetical Order?
To answer that, we do need to go back to the typewriter—but not as far as many QWERTY histories take you.
Christopher Latham Sholes and his collaborators developed early writing machines in the late 1860s and early 1870s. Their early keyboards were not arranged exactly like the QWERTY layout we know today. The design went through many iterations before a QWERTY-based version reached the market through E. Remington & Sons in 1874.
Why the letters ended up in their particular positions is less settled than the usual internet explanation suggests.
One long-standing theory is that the layout evolved partly in response to mechanical problems in early typewriters, where certain combinations of nearby typebars could interfere with one another.
Another historical theory argues that telegraph operators influenced the developing layout because they needed to transcribe Morse code efficiently, and an alphabetical keyboard wasn't necessarily ideal for that workflow.
Historians still debate how much each factor contributed.
So the most accurate answer is not:
"QWERTY was invented to slow people down."
It's this:
QWERTY evolved over several iterations alongside early typewriter technology and the workflows of the people using it.
Was QWERTY Really Designed to Slow Down Typists?
This is one of the most persistent QWERTY myths.
The short answer is no—not in the simple way the story is usually told.
Mechanical limitations were part of the environment in which early typewriters were developed, but "the inventor deliberately made people type slowly" turns a complicated history into a neat story that the evidence doesn't fully support.
Research into the development of the keyboard has also connected its evolution to the needs of telegraph operators. In fact, that interpretation makes the idea of intentionally slowing operators down particularly questionable: a telegraph receiver needed to keep up with incoming messages, not deliberately fall behind them.
It's better to think of QWERTY as an evolved solution to nineteenth-century requirements, rather than a layout designed around a single objective.
Why Do We Still Use QWERTY?
This is arguably the more interesting question.
Modern mechanical keyboards don't have nineteenth-century typebars that need to be kept apart. We could arrange letters almost any way we wanted.
And technically, we do have alternatives.
But changing a keyboard layout is different from changing a keyboard.
If you've typed on QWERTY for years, you've built muscle memory around it. You don't consciously search for T, R, or Backspace every time you type. Your hands already know where to go.
That familiarity extends beyond letters.
Think about:

A new arrangement can be learned, but it comes with a switching cost.

Smithsonian describes this endurance in terms of path dependency: later technology inherited a convention that had already become deeply established.
QWERTY's modern advantage, then, isn't that every key is in some mathematically perfect position.
It's that the layout is already part of how most of us interact with computers.
Is QWERTY Actually a Good Keyboard Layout?
That depends on the problem you're trying to solve.
If "good" means designed from scratch for a modern computer and optimized purely around finger movement, QWERTY clearly wasn't.
It predates the computer by roughly a century.
But that doesn't make QWERTY automatically bad.
For an existing QWERTY user, it offers some very practical advantages:
- little or no learning curve;
- familiarity across computers and devices;
- predictable shortcut positions;
- widespread hardware support;
- easy switching between your keyboard and someone else's.
Alternative layouts approach typing differently, but theoretical layout efficiency is only one part of the experience.
Your actual typing performance also depends on:
- practice;
- technique;
- language;
- muscle memory;
- the keyboard itself;
- and the work you do on it.
So rather than asking whether QWERTY is objectively "best," a more useful question is:
Is QWERTY creating a problem that you actually need to solve?
For many people, the answer is no.
QWERTY vs. Dvorak, Colemak, AZERTY, and QWERTZ
These layouts are often grouped together, but they don't all exist for the same reason.

Should You Switch Away From QWERTY?
Before changing your letter layout, make sure the letter layout is actually the thing bothering you.
Suppose your current keyboard feels uncomfortable because:
- it takes up too much desk space;
- your mouse sits too far to the right;
- you don't use the numpad;
- you want dedicated arrow keys;
- you keep reaching for a function row that isn't there;
- your switches feel too heavy;
- or the keyboard itself sits higher than you'd like.
None of those problems is inherently caused by QWERTY.
They point to questions about:
- keyboard size;
- physical key placement;
- switch feel;
- keycap profile;
- typing angle;
- or overall keyboard design.
Changing from QWERTY to another letter layout won't make a full-size keyboard narrower.
Likewise, changing from a full-size keyboard to a compact 75% board doesn't require giving up QWERTY.
Solve the problem you're actually experiencing first.
What Does QWERTY Tell You When You're Buying a Keyboard?
Surprisingly little.
Once you've confirmed that a keyboard uses the letter arrangement you want, there are several more useful questions to ask.
1. Which physical layout am I buying?
If you're accustomed to a conventional U.S. keyboard, you're probably looking for ANSI-US.
If you're used to another regional standard, check whether the keyboard is available in the physical configuration you expect.
Don't assume that the word QWERTY answers this.
2. Which regional version do I need?
Check the actual legends and regional designation.
US English, British English, German, French, and Japanese configurations can differ well beyond the alphabet.
The right choice is generally the one that matches both your typing habits and the language/input settings you actually use.
3. Which keyboard size fits the way I work?
This is separate from QWERTY.
A smaller keyboard typically saves space by removing or layering certain key groups—not by rearranging the alphabet.
For example:
60% keyboards prioritize compactness and typically move more functions to secondary layers.
65% keyboards remain compact while usually retaining dedicated arrow keys.
75% keyboards typically bring back the function row while keeping the overall footprint tighter than a conventional TKL.
TKL keyboards remove the numpad but preserve a more separated navigation cluster.
96% or compact full-size keyboards retain a numpad while reducing some of the empty space between sections.
All of them can still be QWERTY.
4. Will my keycaps fit?
This is a common place where "it's QWERTY" isn't enough.
Two QWERTY keyboards may require different keycap sizes or sets because of their physical layouts and form factors.
Before buying replacement keycaps, check details such as:
- ANSI or ISO support;
- Enter key shape;
- left and right Shift sizes;
- spacebar size;
- bottom-row sizes;
- any non-standard keys used by a compact layout.
The letters can be correct while the keycaps still don't physically fit.
5. Can I remap the keyboard?
On a programmable keyboard, the printed legend doesn't necessarily determine what a key must do.
Operating-system layouts and keyboard firmware can both change the output of physical keys.
So a keyboard with QWERTY legends can technically be configured to behave like Colemak, Dvorak, or a custom layout.
That also creates an important distinction:
The keycap tells you what is printed there. The software or firmware determines what happens when you press it.
For most users, keeping the two aligned is the simplest option. But they are not inherently the same thing.

What We've Learned From Designing Compact Keyboards
For us, discussions about keyboard layout aren't just theoretical. Physical key placement is one of the decisions we have to make every time we try to reduce the size of a keyboard without making it frustrating to use.
An early example came from the development of the original Air60.
Its predecessor, the NuType F1, made several non-standard layout compromises because of tight physical constraints. Based partly on what we learned from that design and community feedback, we established a clearer principle for Air60: maintain a more standard layout, keep independent arrow keys, and make the keyboard as narrow as possible.
Those goals compete with one another.
Every millimeter you remove from a compact keyboard forces a decision somewhere else:
- Does a key get smaller?
- Does it move?
- Does it disappear onto a secondary layer?
- Do the arrow keys remain dedicated?
- Does saving space make a familiar action harder?
That's why we don't think "compact" should simply mean fewer keys at any cost.
A smaller keyboard is most useful when it removes the things you don't need while preserving the interactions you rely on.
And this brings us back to QWERTY.
The familiar letter arrangement can remain completely unchanged while everything around it—from arrow keys to function rows to numpads—changes according to the purpose of the keyboard.
That's the difference between letter layout and keyboard design.
A 30-Second Check Before You Buy
If you're comparing keyboards and the specifications are starting to blur together, use this sequence:
First: What letter arrangement do I want?
For most U.S. users:
QWERTY
Second: What physical layout am I used to?
For most conventional U.S. keyboards:
ANSI
Third: What regional configuration do I need?
For most U.S. users:
US English
Fourth: Which keys do I actually need?
Ask whether you regularly use:
- a numpad;
- the function row;
- dedicated arrow keys;
- Home, End, Page Up, and Page Down;
- Insert or Delete.
That will help determine whether 60%, 65%, 75%, TKL, 96%, or another form factor makes sense.
Fifth: Do I need customization?
If you intend to remap keys, create layers, or change shortcuts, check the keyboard's software or firmware support rather than assuming QWERTY determines what each key can do.
That's a much more useful way to choose a keyboard than looking for the word QWERTY and stopping there.

Ask:
Which physical layout am I used to?
Which regional configuration do I need?
Which keys do I actually use?
And which form factor gives me those keys without taking up space I don't need?
QWERTY may determine where your letters live.
The rest of the keyboard should be chosen around how you actually use it.
